2023 WNBA attendance report (July 3 update)

Follow along here at Beyond Women’s Sports for the weekly attendance updates in the WNBA. New updates will be published every Monday. The numbers reported below are up to and including games through July 2.

WNBA Attendance: Week in review

Another reasonably solid week for the league as it nears its halfway point. Furthermore, there were 17 games this week in total that ended on July 2. The largest crowd for the week was on June 29 in Las Vegas (9,587). Meanwhile, despite two more sell-outs (June 30 and July 2), the Atlanta Dream once again had the smallest crowd for the week (3,209).

The league’s overall average is up by 16.3% (+0.7% from last week). Additionally, the league is slightly ahead of its 2019 final average as well (6,527). Once again, the Las Vegas Aces (+3,186) are seeing the largest increase and the Seattle Storm (-1,789) are seeing the biggest decrease in attendance from 2022.

Below is the graphic comparing to the 2022 season’s final averages. The reported capacity numbers for each arena are based on the team’s arena being fully open. Half of the league’s teams play in NBA-sized arenas that, unless needed, close off their upper bowl sections*.

Capacity numbers are provided by each team’s individual arena’s website. Also reported are each team’s individual high and low games for the season. All attendance numbers are provided through Acrossthetimeline.com.

*The Minnesota Lynx at Target Center, the New York Liberty at Barclays Center, the Los Angeles Sparks at Crypto.com Arena, the Phoenix Mercury at Footprint Arena, the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and the Seattle Storm at Climate Pledge Arena.

Attendance Report

Hard to believe that the league is nearing its halfway point. The league’s All-star Game (July 15 in Las Vegas) is coming up, and attendance tends to increase following the season’s midway point. The attendance report from last week (through June 26) is still available. The next attendance report will be released on the weekend of the All-star game.
