In June 2010, Alicia Fox made history as the first African-American superstar to hold the Divas title. However, the journey to the WWE started back in 2006 at the developmental territory OVW (Ohio Valley Wrestling). She made her debut as a referee and became an in-ring talent months later. It was there that she stepped into the squared circle and began making a name for herself as a wrestler. Without question, it was a matter of time before Fox would become a household name.
On June 13, 2008, made her debut in WWE on SmackDown. Fox played the role of a wedding planner to Vickie Guerrero and Edge. She was a pivotal part of the Guerrero – Edge storyline as Fox kissed Edge ahead of his marriage to Guerrero. What’s more, Fox tried to help Edge in his WWE title match at the Great American Bash pay-per-view in July 2008. Once that storyline came to an end, history would soon follow the Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida native.
How Alicia Fox Won the Divas Title
Moving ahead to 2010, Fox was in the hunt for the WWE Divas with other talented superstars at the time. These superstars included the Bella Twins, Beth Phoenix, Eve, Maryse, and Gail Kim. Nonetheless, she faced Eve, Maryse & Kim at Fatal 4-Way at the same-named pay-per-view for the Divas title. Ultimately, Fox came out on top and made history, winning the title. While she was the first, Fox was certainly not the last female African-American champion.
Fox and Her Legacy in WWE
To younger wrestling fans, seeing Bianca Belair, Sasha Banks, and Naomi as champions inspired African-American girls to become superstars. It’s important to note that Fox was one of the women who paved the way for both Belair and Naomi.

the only Black Diva’s Champion, Alicia Fox was honestly a favorite of mine as a kid & she was done sososo dirty by you guessed it, shit creative. An unfortunate constant through most of WWE’s existence but Alicia Fox is a goddamn pioneer pic.twitter.com/edtKc3vukl
That’s Fox’s legacy in WWE history: making history so the next generation of African-American girls can do the same. One day, the WWE Hall of Fame will make her legacy last then, now, and forever.
