Angel Reese suffered a broken foot in the first half of Maryland’s game against Towson. Reese will now miss at least three months due to her injury, meaning she is not expected to return until late February.
Reese is a 6-foot-3 forward for the Terrapins from Saint Frances Academy located in Baltimore, Maryland. Before her injury, she was averaging 13.3 points and 7 rebounds a game.
“I haven’t had a freshman come in with the leadership qualities, the vocalness, the confidence, that this freshman has come in with,” Frese told reporters before Reese’s injury.
Maryland is losing a key player, but coach Brenda Frese is confident that her players will fill in so Maryland can continue to dominate in the Big Ten.
Frese tells Washington Post that Mimi Collins and Faith Masonius could get more minutes or the team could play small ball with four guards at times. Either way, Maryland is known for its dominant offense and Frese wants to keep that reputation.
The Terrapins kick-off conference play next week against Rutgers on Dec. 14, 2020. In that same week, they will face James Madison then pick back up on Big Ten play.
Since the Terrapins are ranked No. 14 in the NCAA rankings, that makes them the highest-ranked team amongst their conference. Although, Indiana is not too far behind the Terrapins.
According to testudotimes, if Reese’s recovery works in her favor; she will be back in time for tournament play. Maryland holds the title of Big Ten regular-season champs as well as the tournament champs. Most importantly, they hope to bring back the title again despite this strange season.
Maryland has lost a key player for a long period of time, however, the Terrapins and Angel Reese believe everything will work out the way it’s supposed to—another winning season for Maryland.
