In a press conference held after today’s Chicago Sky training camp; it seems like the Sky is forming a new identity and that is defense. Having a few missing players from the Chicago Sky training camp due to COVID-19 protocol or overseas commitments; hasn’t stopped Chicago’s Sky Head Coach James Wade from moving forward in camp. Taking questions at today’s press conference; Wade said that the team’s focus as of right now is working on its team defense, transitional defense, and rebounding.
Wade also gave praise to draftee Natasha Mack saying, “She has blocked almost every player at camp.”
Having a star like Candace Parker has helped Chicago so far defensively; players like Kahleah Copper and Mack translated to the media how much the 14-year veteran. And 2020 Defensive Player of the Year has supported them. I quoted Copper as saying, “Parker has challenged her when it comes to defense.” When I posed the question to draftee Mack; who was credited as a defensive specialist while attending OSU told Beyond Women’s Sports this when asked about Parker:
“Before I step on the floor, she makes sure that I have my defensive assignments down; if I mess up, she’ll pull me to the side and explain what I did wrong and I greatly appreciate it because she’s a legend.”
The defense was a problem for Chicago this past season as they ranked sixth in team defense. And sixth in opponent points.
The defense wasn’t the only thing talked about during today’s press conference. Coach Wade again gave an update about Diamond DeShields saying, “She is right where the Chicago Sky needs her to be and that she is mixing well with newcomer Candace Parker.”
Wade too hinted that draftee Shyla Heal should join the team later after getting her visa approved.
Chicago will play its first preseason game next week against the Indiana Fever.
