The UConn Huskies beat the Tennessee Vols 84-67 on Thursday night. UConn got off to a terrific start leading 33-17 after the first quarter, but Tennessee battled back, outscoring the Huskies 1907 in the second quarter to trail only four points at the half. In the second half, the Huskies pulled away with hot shooting and good defense.
Aaliyah Edwards was a force in the paint scoring 25 points and grabbing seven rebounds. She shot 9-17 from the field. This season Edwards has come into her own; she went into the game averaging 17.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game while shooting 62.9% from the field.
Lou Lopez Senechal also played a fantastic game, scoring 26 points on 11-16 shooting from the field and 4-6 from beyond the arc. With all the injuries UConn has dealt with, having Lopez Senechal step up is great for the Huskies. So far this season, she is scoring 16.9 points per game.
Dorka Juhasz and Aubrey Griffin added 13 points apiece, while Nika Muhl played her awesome floor game, dishing out 14 assists.
UConn shot 55% from the field and 57.1% from three-point land; they lost the rebounding battle 41-30 but still managed to win. The Huskies did an excellent passing the ball dishing out 24 team assists.
On defense, UConn played well, holding Tennessee to 39.4% shooting from the field. However, Jordan Horston did score 27 points off the bench for the Vols. Rickea Jackson scored points, but turnovers were critical in the Huskies’ win. Tennessee turned the ball over 21 times.
In the future, UConn must do better rebounding. Tennessee had 23 offensive rebounds. It is hard to win when giving up that many offensive rebounds. With all the injuries, this was a good road win for the Huskies. It will be interesting to see what they can do if they can get healthy.
