The Washington Mystics announced on Sunday that they have waived guard, Essence Carson. Carson’s first season with the Mystics before being waived. She was one of 10 available players on the Mystics roster. The Mystics, although they are the reigning champions, are without key players such as Elena Delle Donne and Natasha Cloud. They are off to a slow start with a 3-7 record. Shey Peddy was waived by the Mystics on Monday. As a replacement, the Mystics then signed Sug Sutton, a rookie, out of the University of Texas. As a result of being waived, Essence Carson gets picked up by the Sun.
WNBA Career
Carson was drafted in 2008 with the seventh overall pick to the New York Liberty. Carson then played eight seasons with the Liberty before moving onto the Sparks. She only played three seasons with the Sparks before moving to the Phoenix Mercury. After one season with the Mercury, Carson landed with the Mystics. During last year’s season with the Mercury, she averaged 5.8 PPG, 1.5 AST, and 2.2 RPG. Even though her numbers might not seem like a lot, her energy on the floor is a huge contribution. In only 10 games this season thus far, she is averaging 4.3 PPG and 1.8 RPG. Carson was also behind talented guards such as Leilani Mitchell and Ariel Atkins. Carson has had a long career with many teams thus far that does not appear to be ending soon. Now, Essence Carson is picked up by the Sun.
The Sun is Looking Ahead
Due to the coronavirus, WNBA teams are residing in Bradenton, Florida at the IMG Academy. All players are in what is called the Wubble, in a central location, which makes it easier for players to be able to move teams if necessary. Carson should be able to join the Sun on the court, practice, and games in a short period of time.
The Connecticut Sun are a team with yet another slow start. With only a 4-7 record, HC Curt Miller and the Sun are struggling to have the rhythm that led them to last year’s WNBA Finals. Although the Sun lost players like Layshia Clarendon and Courtney Williams, they received super-star DeWanna Bonner. Carson will be able to help this Sun team get back on the right track. She has both the speed and the energy that the Sun really is in dire need of currently. Hopefully, we will see Carson on the court soon with a Sun jersey, but for now, we can only wish for her success with the Sun and be grateful she got picked up by the Sun.
