Brittney Sykes is a free agent and will visit the Atlanta Dream and the Dallas Wings. Sykes has played in the WNBA for six seasons for the Dream and the Los Angeles Sparks. This past season Sykes averaged 12.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.0 steals per game for the Sparks.
With Latricia Trammell heading to Dallas to coach the Wings, could Sykes soon follow? Trammell was on the Sparks coaching staff the past three seasons, along with Sykes. Trammell was in charge of the Sparks’ defense, and Sykes was one of the best defensive players for Los Angeles.
Under Trammell’s scheme, Sykes made three consecutive WNBA All-Defensive teams. She made her first All-Defensive team in 2020 as a second team member. Sykes followed that up in 2021 with a spot on the First Team and finishing second for Defensive Player of the Year.
Sykes is very athletic and is known for her pressure defense. The guard led the WNBA in both total steals (65) and steals per game (2.0) in 2022, both career-highs. In addition, she was the WNBA steals leader for back-to-back seasons (2021 and 2022), becoming just the third player in league history to accomplish this, joining Teresa Weatherspoon and Tamika Catchings.
On Offense, Sykes is a slasher that can get to the basket and occasionally sets her teammates up for open looks. If she could improve her shot, it would help her game, but she is a fantastic defender that could help the Wings. Even Sykes’s ability to slash to the basket would put pressure on opposing defenses.
With Sykes and Trammell having a good relationship, she could end up with the Wings. Sykes could help Trammell install her defense and help lead the defensive charge for Dallas. Defense could help win the Wings a lot of games, so adding a player like Sykes would be huge.
