Kelsey Plum Excels in Win over the Wings

With two guards out in Sunday’s matchup against the Wings, Coach Becky Hammon said it was “next woman up,” but in this game, Kelsey Plum took the game into her own hands. Kelsey Plum told Coach Hammon, “don’t sub me unless I suck,” and Plum certainly did not play bad, hence why she played the full 40 minutes of the game, hardly looking tired. The Aces defeated the Wings 84-78 with a great performance by Plum. Kelsey Plum excels in Win over the Wings.

Gameplay

In the first half alone, Plum knew what she needed to do to win the game for the team. In the first quarter alone, Plum took over the game, shooting 4-6 from the field while the rest of the team went 3 for 14. The Aces scored only 18 points in the first quarter and Plum had 11 of those points. Plum led all scorers with 17 points at the end of the first half. The Aces still leading the Wings 40-38 with the help of Plum’s seemingly effortless scoring.

The second half was another battle for the Aces. Despite many runs on offense by the Aces, the Wings kept cutting into their lead. Additionally, one of the Aces’ leading scorers picked up her 4th foul less than a minute into the 3rd quarter. At one point in the 3rd quarter, both A’ja Wilson (foul trouble) and Chelsea Gray (hit in the mouth) were unable to be in the game. Plum had to become even more of a floor general and extend her minutes, unable to get a break, although it is a tall task per her request.

Kelsey finished the game shooting 52.6% from the field. She passed her season-high of 24 points and tied her career-high of 32 points. With Riquna Williams and Jackie Young out, a significant task was handled by Plum. Regardless she answered the task with a phenomenal 40-minute game. Plum is the first player this season to play a full 40-minute game. In the end, she even seemed like she could play another 40 minutes. Plum finished the game with an impressive stat line, 32 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.

About Aislyn Jowers

I've grown up going to NCCAW games, when Tiffany Mitchell was drafted to the Indiana Fever in 2016 it opened the doors to the WNBA for me. Ever since then, I have been an avid watcher of both the WNBA and NCAAW games. Instead of bothering my family and friends with my thoughts about the game, I decided I will write about it instead.
