On Thursday afternoon the Los Angeles Sparks announced the renewal of assistant coach Fred Williams’s contract. Fred Williams joined the Sparks coaching staff in 2019; after serving as the Head Coach of the Tulsa Shock /Dallas Wings for four seasons (2014-2018). In his two seasons with the Sparks coaching staff; the Sparks have posted a 37-19 regular-season record and have finished with the third-best overall record in both seasons.
News of Fred Williams’ contract renewal all but solidifies the Sparks coaching staff for the 2021 WNBA season. Los Angeles, in the previous weeks; has reported the contract extension of Head Coach Derek Fisher and his promotion as the team’s general manager.
Los Angeles also announced the contract renewal of assistant coach Latricia Trammell; after she received a coaching offer from the Dallas Wings Head Coach Vickie Johnson.
In an official announcement put out by the Sparks; Fisher had this to say about what Fred Williams brings to the team.
“Fred’s knowledge and experience in the WNBA continues to be a major asset to the Sparks’ organization,” Fisher replied. “I am excited about the continuity we’ve established the last two seasons with our coaching staff and look forward to having Coach Fred back in person with our players.”
Fred Williams who has over 35 years of coaching experience in professional and collegiate women’s basketball said this about returning to the Sparks’ organization.
“I am extremely thankful that Coach Fisher and the Sparks ownership group have given me the opportunity to continue my coaching career in Los Angeles, “I look forward to working towards a championship with a great group of women this season.”
With their coaching staff now solidified; Los Angeles who still has many questions surrounding their roster; can now put their energy and focus on who will play in purple and gold in the summer.
