On Tuesday night, the Nebraska Cornhuskers women’s basketball team pulled off a big upset, and they beat the No.8 Michigan Wolverines 79-58. It was Nebraska’s first win against a top 10 team since 2014. Nebraska got off to a good start, leading after the first quarter 19-8. At the half, Nebraska led 34-21 and never looked back. Michigan struggled offensively in the first half, connecting on just 29.6 percent (8-for-27) of its shots from the field compared to a 51.7 percent showing (15-for-29) for the Huskers, who also held a 23-14 advantage on the glass.
Nebraska did an outstanding job holding Michigan’s top two leading scorers in check. Naz Hillmon is averaging 20.9 points per game on the season. However, she scored only ten points on Tuesday on 4-14 shooting from the field. Hillmon also grabbed seven rebounds. Second in scoring, Leigha Brown scored ten points on 3-13 shooting. Emily Kiser led Michigan in scoring with 13 points.
The Wolverines did have one other starter in double-figures, but Nebraksa held them to only 36.7% from the field and 8.3% from beyond the arc.
Alexis Markowski led the Cornhuskers in scoring with 20 points while shooting 7-10 from the field. Markowski also grabbed seven rebounds. Jaz Shelley added 12 points, Isabelle Bourne scored 11 points, and Sam Haiby pitched in scored 10 points.
Although Nebraska turned the ball 21 times, they did an outstanding job shooting from the field. The Cornhuskers shot 51.7% from the field and 40% from three-point land. They also outrebound Michigan 42-34.
Nebraska came into the game unranked, but their record is 13-1. It was a dominant performance; they were in control of the game from the tip. On Sunday, the Cornhuskers will take on No.22 Iowa; it will be another chance for them to knock off a ranked opponent.
