Karolina Pliskova came into the US Open as the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Caroline Garcia in the second round of the tournament. Garcia beat Pliskova 6-1, 7-6.
Garcia and Pliskova
Caroline Garcia came into the US Open unseeded, but in 2018 Garcia was ranked high as four, so it was not a big of an upset as you would think. Before their match on Wednesday, Pliskova and Garcia had played six times, with each winning three matches.
“I knew I could give her trouble for sure,” Garcia said of Pliskova, whom she had not faced since 2018. “She gets a lot of confidence from her serve, so I was trying to be really focused on the return and trying to make as many returns as I could.”
Garcia after her victory
In the first set, Garcia was dominant, but in the second set, Pliskova stepped her game up and had set point in the second set but could not come through.
“I think I didn’t play that bad,” Pliskova said. “I thought she played great tennis in the first set. She was just playing super aggressive, going for her shots.
Pliskova on how she played
Plioskva is a good sever, but she struggled with serve early in the match, which caused her to fall behind.
“I maybe didn’t play my best. I didn’t serve that great, especially early in the match. But that’s how it is sometimes. I’m not a robot, so I don’t have to play every day amazing.”
More Pliskova
Garcia will go on to face Jen Brady in the third round; Brady won the Top Seed Open last month in Kentucky.
