Last night the reigning four-time Euroleague champions Olympique Lyonnais Féminine celebrated their ninth Coupe de France win of franchise history. The win came after a tied game with Paris Saint-Germain Féminine in Auxerre that led to a penalty shoot-out. Despite the efforts of Chilean goalkeeper, Christiane Endler-finalist for FIFA’s Best Female Goalkeeper of 2019- Lyon was able to sink in four penalties. Securing a close win thanks to the impressive performance of Lyonnais goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi.
Who prior to the summer had plans to head to the US along with German international Dzenifer Maroszan. Who was set to join the NWSL’s Utah Royals before the COVID-19 breakout. Both of whom had significant roles in the team’s performance this season; landing them a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals on the 22nd.
Despite a serve thunderstorm knocking out the power in the first half; both teams returned to the field with an immense focus. Yet, PSG could not keep up with OL, who were able to repeatedly break down PSG’s defense. Especially Nikita Parris, the England international gave cold sweats to Endler (34th). Then forced Irene Paredes to make a last-minute rescue keeping PSG in the game (41st).
The pace began to slow down in the second half with Parris missing a chance to put the Lyonnais ahead (69th). Despite increased action from PSG in the last minutes of regulation time, the game went into penalties. Ending in a 4-3 victory for the reigning champs as they look forward to retaining their title.
