Serena Williams to Return at Top Seed Open

Serena Williams

Late last week, it was announced that Serena Williams would make her return to tennis at a tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. The competition is called the Top Seed Open, and it will take place on August 10. Also, joining Williams will be a former U.S Open champion, Sloane Stephens.

It will be Williams’s first match since February when she played for the U.S in the Fed Cup. Williams helped Team USA beat Lativa. She defeated Jelena Ostapenko and was beaten by Anastasija Sevastova. Tennis shut down in March due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and is scheduled to resume in August.

Last month, Williams said she would be playing in the U.S Open on August 31. Williams has 23 Grand Slam victories, and at the U.S open, she will be trying for a 24th Grand Slam. If Williams wins the U.S Open, she will tie Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slams. Williams will be turning 39 soon, so I’m sure she (Williams) wants to match and break the record soon before she gets older.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion had this to say about the U.S Open and the safety of tennis. “Ultimately, I really cannot wait to return to New York and play the U.S. Open 2020. I feel like the U.S.T.A. is going to do a really good job of ensuring everything is amazing and everyone is safe.”

Serena Williams, last Grand Slam title, came against her sister Venus Williams at the Australian Open in 2017. In the 2017 Australian Open Serena beat Venus in two sets, both 6-4. After that, Williams went on to lose her next four Grand Slam appearances.

2020

In 2020, Williams won the 2020 ASB Classic by defeating Jessica Pegula. In the 2020 Australian Open, after winning the first two rounds, Williams was defeated by Wang Qiang in three sets.

Williams is the greatest tennis player of all-time; it will be great to see her on the tennis court again. Hopefully, she can win her 24th Grand Slam on August 31.
