The Los Angeles Sparks and Nneka Ogwumike have finally agreed on a contract. Ogwumike, cored earlier this year and decided on a two-year contract for the Sparks.
Via press release, Nneka had this to say. “Los Angeles has been my professional home for the last decade, and I’m excited to continue my journey as a member of the LA Sparks,” Ogwumike said. “I want to thank our ownership group, our entire front office staff, and our coaches for their commitment and dedication to growing our league. I’m proud to be a part of an organization with championship history and expectations, and I’m motivated to continue building the Sparks legacy as we head into our 25th anniversary season. I’m determined and focused on competing at the highest level with my teammates.”
Last season in the bubble, Ogwumike averaged a career-low of 13.3 points per game in 18 games played. She will look to bounce back next season. With Candace Parker and Chelsea Gray no longer with the Sparks. Ogwumike will need to step up.
MVP Season
Ogwumike will need to play as she did in her MVP season in 2016 when she averaged 19.7 points, 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 66% from the field. As you can see, Nneka is one of the most efficient players in WNBA history.
Via press release, Sparks head coach had this to say about Ogwumike returning. “Nneka Ogwumike is an exemplary person, athlete, and teammate,” General Manager/Head Coach Derek Fisher said. “We are grateful to return one of the league’s generational talents and leaders. Not only has Nneka won an MVP and championship on the court. But she is an MVP off the court for her pivotal work in the social justice movement and as WNBPA President.”
With Parker and Gray gone, it will be up to Ogwmuike to lead this new look Sparks team. She is a six-time All-Star, and I think she is up for the challenge.
