Team Mitchell Victorious in Athletes Unlimited

Eventually, we expected some lights out shooting in Athletes Unlimited Basketball and this game didn’t disappoint. Team Mitchell, led by Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell, used a strong third quarter to get their first victory of the opening weekend. 

In total, Team Mitchell went 11-of-17 from the field on their way to a 36-point explosion in the third quarter. This is the most points by a team in any quarter this week.

Team Micthell was down by a 63-56 margin early in the third quarter in the game.

Eventually, they used a 16-5 run to get a 72-68 lead it did release. Mitchell ignited the scoring with seven points.  They defeated Team Sims, led by Atlanta Dream guard Odyssey Sims, by a score of 108-103. Team Sims scored 50 of its 103 points in the paint and had 18 second-chance points.

But Team Mitchell turned 18 turnovers into 23 points in the Athletes Unlimited basketball game.

Overall, Team Mitchell had five players in double figures. Atlanta Dream forward Tianna Hawkins had her first double-double of the Athletes Unlimited Basketball season.

Altogether, Hawkins had 14 points and 10 rebounds. She went 5-for-11 from the field and was 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.  

Mitchell led her team with 27 points, shooting 9-of-12, including 5-of-5 from beyond the arc. In addition to making all four free throws, she also tallied four assists. What’s more, seven-year WNBA veteran guard Sydney Colson scored 16 points while dishing out nine assists and having four steals for Team Mitchell.

Although they lost the game, former Dream center Kalani Brown came off the bench to score a game-high 32 points for Team Sims in the Athletes Unlimited loss.

Equally important, 24 of those came in the first half, netting 15 points in the first quarter. Brown also snagged seven rebounds for Team Sims, which had a 45-33 advantage on the boards over Team Mitchell. 

Then, former New York Liberty guard Essence Carson posted a game-high 11 boards along with 15 points. Despite the defeat, Sims posted her first double-double of the season with 31 points and 12 assists.

The Irving, Texas native went 9-for-20 from the field, including a 4-for-6 from deep, while knocking down all nine free-throw attempts.

MVP 1: Brown (Team Sims) – 90 points (500 points) 

MVP 2: Mitchell (Team Mitchell) – 60 points (608 points) 

MVP 3: Hawkins (Team Mitchell) – 30 points (426 points)
