On Thursday night, the Aces overcame many obstacles to defeat the Lynx to advance to 5-1. Despite the Aces leading by many points at various parts of the game, the Lynx continued to cut into their lead. However, the Aces were able to persevere and pull out their fifth win in 6 games thus far. The Aces Advance to 5-1 with Win Over the Lynx.
First Half
At the end of the first quarter, the Aces led with a one-point lead (26-25) over the Lynx. The Aces shot 71.4% from FG in the first quarter, taking several minutes to miss their first shot after several baskets, including 3s made by players such as Jackie Young and A’ja Wilson. The Lynx started cutting into the once large lead by slowing down the Aces and finally making shots. In the first quarter alone, Young had 11 points. The Lynx’s largest contributor was Aerial Powers, with 9 points in the first quarter.
At the end of the first half, the Aces extended the lead by 54-43. The Aces scored 28 points in the second quarter, while the Lynx only scored 18. Leading the Aces in scoring after the first was Young with 14 points and Kelsey Plum with 10 points. Chelsea Gray also led with 5 assists. For the Lynx, Powers led with 16 points and Sylvia Fowles with 10 points. Moriah Jefferson had 4 assists. The Aces shot 58.8% in the first half and defensively were able to limit scoring from the Lynx. The Aces ended the 2nd quarter with a 9-2 run and shooting 7-16 from 3.
Second Half
At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Aces led by 70-66. However, the Aces struggled in this quarter on both sides of the ball, as the Lynx were able to cut into their once 11-point lead. In this quarter, all five of the Aces starters ended up in double figures, most of their starters remaining in for the majority of the quarter. The Lynx had three players in double figures but still not enough to overcome the Aces’ scoring. The Lynx outscored the Aces in the 3rd quarter by a score of 23-16. But the Aces scoring in the 2nd quarter held the Aces’ lead to 4. Powers had 21 points at the end of the 3rd for the Lynx. For the Aces, the leading scorer was Young, with 17.
Despite the Lynx’s desire to keep cutting into the Aces’ lead, they could not come out victorious. The Aces on both sides of the floor were too dominant early on, making it difficult for them to come back. With five players in double figures, it is hard to tackle that, especially for the Lynx, as they are just getting their team together since many of their players are back from overseas commitments.
Young led the Aces with 25 points and 3 steals. Dearica Hamby had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Hamby also hit her 2000 points during the 4th quarter. Powers led the Lynx with 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Jessica Shepard brought in 14 points and 14 rebounds. Fowles also had 20 points. But this was not enough to beat the Aces. Despite the win, Becky Hammon spoke about her Aces team after the game, “we are well away from how good I think we can be.”
