The 2021 Chicago Sky got their season started off on the right note as they took down the Washington Mystics 70-56). The game marked the start of the Candace Parker era in Chicago; The 2x MVP and WNBA Champion did not disappoint in her debut as she finished the game with 16 points and 8 rebounds to go along with 4 assists and 3 blocks shots.
Another bright spot for Chicago was Kahleah Copper who was the team’s leading scorer with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Copper who’s going into her 6th year in the WNBA has seen statistical improvements each season.
When asked about if she has reached her ceiling in the league James Wade said this when talking about Copper,
“She’s capable of a lot, and we don’t know if we have seen her ceiling because she’s such a young player but she’s been working hard on her shot, and we are gonna keep encouraging her to reach new heights”.
Chicago suffered from some chemistry woes as the team committed 14 turnovers during the game; when asked about the turnovers during the team’s position game press conference Head Coach James Wade said, “that will be something that the team works on and as chemistry grows they should cut the turnovers down”
Chicago also went through a scoring drought in the 3rd quarter. The Sky would score 11 points as a unit in the 3rd quarter. During the team’s post-game presser Candace Parker took the blame for the drought. Saying she has to be better and that the team has to be better in the 3rd. But it still was a good start to the Candace Parker Era.
Chicago’s next game will be against The Atlanta Dream. The Sky will be without Center Stefanie Dolson as she’s going to train with the USA 3×3 national team.
