The NWSL challenge cup concluded today with the Houston Dash securing their first Championship title of franchise history after a 2-0 win against last year’s runner ups the Chicago Red Stars.
Within the first five minutes of the game, Kayla Sharples earned a yellow card against Kristie Mewis. This drew a penalty for the Dash that led to the first goal of the game by Canadian international Sophie Schmidt. Mewis was later subbed out due to a minor injury from the altercation after playing through it for 30 minutes.
Despite losing one of their key players, the Dash held an impressive performance throughout the game. With the driving force being their defense. By staying tightly packed on the backline, the team kept the Red Stars on their toes. With a total of 12 tackles and 29 clearances along with four saves from Jane Campbell. Tying her with Golden Glove winner Kailen Sheridan with 21 overall and making this her fourth shutout of the tournament.
With many wondering if her impressive performance will earn her another call up from USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski. Campbell started her experience with the USWNT at just 17 back in 2013. And received her last call up during December’s identification camp. After earning three caps for the National Team under former coach Jill Ellis.
The second goal did not come until the 91′ minute from Shea Groom, coming off an assist from England international and team Captain Rachel Daly. Which not only put the Dash up but also secured Daly’s lead in the race for The Golden Boot.
The England forward and MVP of the tournament also landed a spot in the NWSL best starting XI along with Shea Groom. This, along with Campbell and Groom earning Save and Woman Of The Match, gave the Dash a lot to celebrate. And luckily for the fans, the players made sure to document every minute of it.
