The NWSL Challenge Cup is Heating Up

NWSL

The NWSL came back with a bang as the first professional contact sport to return in the states with its Challenge Cup Tournament.

Since its start in late June, there have been many memorable moments leading up to this Wednesday’s semi-finals. Including several powerful acts of advocacy and activism from players and staff on and off the field. And with many starters sitting out newcomers and underplayed players have been delivering breakout performances.

Things began to heat up as The Cup’s quarter-finals kicked off this past Friday with quite a few notable moments. With one of the most shocking being that retired World Cup Champion and current Thorns goalkeeper coach, Nadine Angerer joined the bench as a backup goalkeeper. Angerer was added to the rooster after breakout star Bella Bixby suffered a torn ACL earlier in the week. However, despite being listed, she did not see any playtime in Friday’s game against The North Carolina Courage.

Instead, the game showcased an impressive performance from third rank Thorns, goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom. It was the first time she represented the team since August of last year with a total of eight saves. Earning the praise of 2x World Cup Champion, Ashlynn Harris, as well as former USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo.

The second draft pick Morgan Weaver scored the first goal of her NWSL career. Successfully securing the Thorn’s 1-0 win and knocking the courage out of the running for the title and effectively ending their two-year reign.

A close game by the Houston Dash and Utah Royals followed with the Dash edging by during penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw. Despite an impressive shot from the rookie, Tziarra King, Jane Campbell secured the 3-2 victory with two critical saves.

The second day of quarter-finals was just as eventful, with another close game as Sky Blue FC knocked out The Washington Spirit. The game came to yet another 0-0 draw and a penalty shoot-out. Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan secured the win making the game 4-3.

Later in the day, the OL reign faced off against the Chicago Red Stars. After several close calls, the game entered with penalties making this the third goalless game. The match ultimately ended in a 4-3 win for Chicago with Reign goalkeeper Casey Murphy having a difficult time in the first penalty shootout of her NWSL career.

The semi-finals are set for this Wednesday with the Portland Thorns vs. the Houston Dash at 12:30 PM and Sky Blue FC vs. the Chicago Red Stars at 10 PM. This is the first time the Dash has made the playoffs in franchise history, and the first time Sky Blue has been since 2013. Hopes are high as the four teams prepare to battle it out for a spot in Sunday’s final.
