Free agent point guard Courtney Vandersloot, a beloved figure among Chicago Sky fans, is set to make a significant homecoming. After a two-year stint with the New York Liberty, Vandersloot returns to the team where she spent the first 12 seasons of her career. Her return is not just a player returning but a reunion expected to impact the team and her career significantly.

Last year with the Liberty, Vandersloot helped the Liberty win the WNBA Championship. She averaged 6.4 points per game and 4.8 assists per game.

Under the guidance of new head coach Tyler Marsh, the Chicago Sky is undergoing a significant transformation. The team, which has been rebuilding over the past few seasons, now has a roster brimming with young talent, led by Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. Vandersloot’s addition provides veteran leadership, which is a reassuring sign for the team’s future.

The point guard is a pass-first point guard and will help Reese and Cardosos get easy baskets. With Vandersloot running the offense, it should run much smoother than last year. Reese, Cardoso should not have to work as head to get baskets. Reese, the No. 7 pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, is coming off a season in which she put up 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game, while Cardoso averaged 9.8 points and 7.9 rebounds.

Vandersloot’s journey to Chicago began when she was drafted No. 3 in the 2011 draft out of Gonzaga. She immediately became an All-Star rookie and earned All-Rookie Team honors after scoring 6.5 points and 3.7 assists per game. Her early success set the stage for her return, a moment that Chicago Sky fans can be proud of.

Vandersloot’s legacy with the Sky evokes nostalgia and pride. Her pivotal role in the team’s 2014 WNBA Finals appearance, where she led the league in assists, and her career-best season in 2020 are testament to her dedication and skill.
