Friday, I had the pleasure of flying out to Las Vegas to cover the WNBA All-Star weekend. This trip was my second trip to an all-star game in Vegas but my first with media credentials. Getting off the airport, I was immediately hit with WNBA signage in the airport—a very noticeable change from my 2019 visit. Read more about my weekend as I recap WNBA All-Star weekend.
WNBA Live
I took some time to explore the activations at Mandalay Bay. The Jordan activation was a vibe. They had huge displays for their three current players: Dana Evans, Dearica Hamby, and Rhyne Howard. There was a shopping experience with shoes and merchandise that had not been made available to the public yet. Additionally, there was a half-court basketball set that featured various panels and mini-games all weekend.
WNBA Live was also at Mandalay Bay, hosting activations for every WNBA partner, including Google, Mielle Organics, Dicks Sporting Goods, Wilson, Starry, Under Armour, Playa Society, and many more.
Friday —Kia Skills Challenge/Starry 3-point contest
And, of course, the most important part of Friday was the Kia Skills Challenge and the Starry 3-point contest. Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum of the Las Vegas Aces won the 2023 KIA WNBA Skill Challenge on Friday, defeating duos from Atlanta, Dallas, and New York. Then I witnessed history as Sabrina Ionescu hit 37 of the 40 possible points to win the Starry 3-point contest. Ionescu is a crowd favorite, so the place was loud as she was shooting, but when she got to rack three, every eye was on her.
