The WNBA Free Agency 2021 has been madness! And when I say madness, I mean the kind that keeps you up at night or sleeping with one eye open checking your Twitter feed! Or was that just me?
Of course, we’ve read about Candace to the Chi, the Fighting Irish together again with the Lynx, Dupree to Seattle to get a ring, but the sleeper of this year’s free agency? Has got to be Betnijah Laney to the Liberty!

Not just Betnijah Laney, we’re talking about the 2020 Most Improved Player. That Betnijah! Let’s back it up a little though…
Betnijah came into the league as the 17th pick in the 2nd round. Throughout her stint in the W, she was a constant and steady role player for her teams that seemed to grow inch by inch each season. But in 2020, it got interesting.
In the year 2020, where a lot of things were going wrong, Betnijah showed up and showed out. The Wubble season was hers! Laney played in a way that we had never seen from her before. She absolutely exploded. She averaged 17.2 PPG 2.9 RPG 4 APG and 1.6SPG. What a stat line! As I mentioned before she was named Most improved player for the 2020 season, but that isn’t even it. She was also selected as First Team All-Defense. She leveled up in a major way.
And her career-high during this phenomenal season came against, who else but, the New York Liberty.
Although it’s not a guarantee that she can replicate the success that she had in the Wubble, however, it was shocking that the Dream let her slip away.
Laney signed a 3-year contract worth over $550,000 with the NY Liberty and is eager to get started with the young core and create something special. But one thing is for sure that they have a resilient and hardworking player on their way!
